LIN8-2035 : OOBE Usability: A Platform created from Workbench with all defaults can not be connected by Workbench

Created: Dec 3, 2015    Updated: Apr 19, 2018
Resolved Date: Apr 17, 2018
Found In Version: 8.0
Severity: Standard
Applicable for: Wind River Linux 8
Component/s: Workbench Integration

Description

Creating a new WRLinux-8 Platform Project in Workbench with all defaults, no rootfs template for "debug" is configured by default. As a result, the built project does not have tcf-server on the target and can thus not be even connected by Workbench ! The first thing a user would try fails with a very unintuitive error message not pointing to the root cause.

This creates a very bad out-of-box experience for users just learning to use the product, and it is also a regression compared to WRLinux-6 where ROOTFS:debug was configured by default, if a Platform was created in the UI.

The out-of-box defaults should be such that the built Platform is actually usable. Optimizations like stripping down the Platform can be performed later.

Workaround

In the Platform Project Configure dialog, press the "Add Template..." button, filter by "debug", and add the feature/debug template.

Steps to Reproduce

1. Launch Workbench on a fresh empty workspace
2. Delete $HOME/.wrlinux/wrlx_configure_default.properties , such that the configure dialog comes up with defaults
3. Create a new Platform for qemux86_small_debug in Workbench --> No debug rootfs is selected
4. Configure, and "make fs" then try to connect QEMU --> Connect fails
