Recent changes to using the linux-yocto style kernel recipes, have prevented the older approach of simply selecting 'LINUX_KERNEL_TYPE' from working. It is now stated in the documentation and local.conf template that the user should use 'PREFERRED_PROVIDER_virtual/kernel' to select the proper kernel recipe.
